Many boat builders know the familiar feeling of balancing multiple projects at once. Bringing a custom vessel to life requires patience, skill, and the right materials. We love seeing what our creative community builds, and today we are highlighting the impressive work of our talented customer, Steve B.

Steve recently had his hands full with two distinct fiberglass projects. He pulled a brand-new mold for an 11-foot skiff, and he also built and put the finishing touches on a custom 8-foot tiny boat.

Let's take a closer look at the materials and processes Steve used to bring these watercraft to life.

How Steve Built the 8-Foot Tiny Boat

Every great boat build starts with a specific purpose. A friend of Steve's requested a small, one-person boat perfectly sized for navigating a backyard creek and pond. Steve stepped up to the challenge, utilizing a mold to lay up the hull.

(In the background of the tiny boat photos, you can spot the original mold used to create the 8-foot boat. He also has a matching mold for a top cap available if your project requires it.)

To ensure a clean release from the mold, Steve prepped the surface by waxing it with Partall paste #2 and spraying it with Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). For the exterior finish, he sprayed the interior of the mold with a half-gallon of Sea Foam Green Gel Coat.

Once the gel coat tacked up, Steve moved on to the structural fiberglass layup. He started with a layer of three-quarter-ounce chopped strand mat . Next, he reinforced the hull with three sturdy layers of 1708 Biaxial fiberglass with resin.  Finally, he applied an interior gel coat finish. Lastly, Steve fabricated a seat and applied the final gel coat to the inside before it was ready for the water.
