Today, we are highlighting a fantastic customer project from Kevin. Kevin works at Detroit Custom Paint in Clinton Township, Michigan. While his shop primarily focuses on auto collision repair, they have developed a strong niche for fiberglass repairs on jetskis, boats, motorcycles, and specialty cars. Kevin discovered our store through Joe Buskins' popular YouTube channel, Fish Bump TV, and decided to try our products for his latest jetski restoration.

How did Kevin repair the 2004 Kawasaki SXR800 hull?

Kevin's project involved a 2004 Kawasaki SXR800 that had sustained moderate glass damage to the bottom of the hull. Jetskis often suffer this kind of wear and tear from beaching, debris, and regular aquatic use.

After completing the foundational fiberglass repairs to restore the structural integrity of the hull, Kevin prepared the surface for a fresh coat. For the finishing stage, he used our premium white gelcoat. To ensure the material sprayed smoothly and cured with a brilliant shine, he mixed it with styrene as a thinner and added Orca Air Dry Super Clear.

Interestingly, Kevin did not use top-tier, expensive painting equipment for this application. He applied the mixture using an inexpensive Amazon HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray gun equipped with a 2.5mm tip. Even though this was his very first time spraying gelcoat, the combination of quality materials and careful application paid off. The resulting finish was remarkably smooth—so smooth, in fact, that the project photos show the jetski prior to any wet sanding or buffing.
