When one of our customers, Thomas, reached out to share their jet ski seat project, we knew it was something special. This wasn't just another DIY build—it was a labor of love designed to help their special needs daughter safely enjoy one of her favorite activities: riding on a jet ski.
Thomas had never worked with fiberglass before, but that didn't stop them from creating "The Sentinel," a custom jet ski seat built with care, determination, and the right materials. With guidance from our team and a solid plan, they turned inexperience into expertise, layering fiberglass and resin to craft a seat that's both functional and eye-catching.
Here's how they did it.
The Challenge: Safe Water Sports for Everyone
For families with special needs children, finding adaptive equipment for recreational activities can be challenging. Standard jet ski seats don't always provide the support and security needed for riders who require extra stability.
Thomas recognized this gap and decided to take matters into their own hands. Their goal was simple: create a custom seat that would keep their daughter secure and comfortable while out on the water, allowing her to continue enjoying a sport she loved.

The Build: Seven Layers of Fiberglass and Plenty of Guidance
Despite having no prior experience with fiberglass, Thomas dove into the project with confidence—and a little help from our team. We provided product recommendations and step-by-step guidance to ensure the build went smoothly.

The Layering Process
Thomas built the seat using seven alternating layers of 1208 biaxial cloth and CSM, bonded together with vinyl ester resin. This layering technique creates a composite structure that's both lightweight and incredibly strong—perfect for withstanding the demands of water sports.
After the fiberglass cured, they applied two coats of gelcoat to seal and protect the surface. The gelcoat not only adds durability but also provides a smooth base for the final decorative step: a custom vinyl wrap that gives "The Sentinel" its unique personality.

Why This Project Matters
"The Sentinel" is more than just a custom jet ski seat. It represents the power of adaptive solutions and the importance of making recreational activities accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical needs.
Thomas' daughter can now enjoy time on the water with the security and support she needs, and that's what drives projects like this. When standard equipment doesn't meet your needs, building your own solution isn't just possible—it's empowering.
